Why Participate in a Get A Grip League?

The year 2020 has so far been a unique period in history, to say the least. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look as though we will revert back to “normal“ anytime soon. So many things have changed and we’ve all had to adjust to a world unlike any we’ve ever seen. For us competition junkies, we’ve had the rug ripped right from underneath our feet as most OCR (Obstacle Course Race) events, road races, cross-fit competitions, and power lifting meets have been cancelled. Add these events to the already cancelled high school, college, and university seasons and you have very many people that are left without much-needed outlets in life: competition and camaraderie!

Fortunately, there are some events that are still being held! In the Midwest, we have been blessed with a few local OCR’s. Looking at past seasons race/competition schedules, however, there’s just not enough to fully satisfy the craving. If you’re like us, you might be used to traveling every weekend or every other weekend to a different part of the country (or at least throughout your region) to participate in an OCR. While the extreme shrinkage of the 2020 competition has left so many wanting more, it has simultaneously given so many people the extra kick in the pants to take their fitness to the next level! We absolutely love seeing all of the social media posts featuring individuals and families working out at home or outdoors. Ultimately, that’s what we want: People taking control of their fitness and striving to build the best version of themselves!

So… maybe you’ve been able to take advantage in the “down time“ during the COVID-19 restrictions by training and building an improved version of yourself. Maybe you haven’t. Maybe nothing has changed and you’re still able to train similar to what you did prior to the pandemic. Either way, what’s next for you? Well, maybe now is a good time to test yourself. Let’s see how strong you are. Let’s see how much endurance you have. Let’s see how powerful you are. Let’s see how fast you are. Let’s see what your aerobic and anaerobic capacities are. One of our core values is to help people build the best version of themselves. To be the best version of yourself, you need a baseline: Our leagues help you realize and establish your baseline!

The great thing about baselines? They are dynamic- they can improve with solid effort and planning! The challenges that we put together for our leagues will test every facet of your athleticism. Any weakness(es) will be exposed, and that’s ok! So you’re strong as an ox; but can you sprint a 100 meter dash? Or run an efficient 400 meter or 800 meter run? Oh… and those runs are in the middle of a grueling workout and may or may not also include carrying a sandbag! Our leagues include every tool within our facility. Take a look at the pictures and videos in our gallery to get a better idea. Yeah, we utilize a lot of “fun“ tools such as monkey bars, bucket carries, climbing, traverses, assault bikes, and plyo boxes to create the most challenging competition challenges you have faced. We appreciate all methods of building one’s fitness. However, we’ve embraced the methods that build the most optimal performance athlete: Do you have what it takes?

We’re quite sure that you absolutely DO have what it takes; even if you feel like you might not. Witnessing the building of confidence is one of our favorite by-products of witnessing participants training and taking part in the league challenges. Regardless of your current fitness level, you will undoubtedly impress yourself during different portions of the league challenges. There will be portions where you might struggle. That too is OK! Again… uncovering areas to improve on is a great benefit of competing in the league. More importantly: The self-confidence that you build during competition in our leagues transfers to your every day life!

Teamwork makes the dream work“ is a saying we hear quite a bit. This saying is especially true between teammates during league activity. The Get A Grip Training Center Leagues are each a four-week long league where each 3-person team faces a new challenge each week. During week 1, all teams take on the exact same challenge(s) as the other teams. Each week thereafter, there will be new challenges that all of the teams will face. Each challenge will be scored either by number of reps/challenges completed within a specified time, and/or how quickly the specified number of reps/challenges are completed. These challenges force teams to strategize and think on their feet while under duress. Teammates have to recognize if one is struggling, and figure out how best to complete the challenge, even if they themselves are the one struggling. The Pain Cave: Where mental toughness is forged.

Lastly, when you participate in our leagues, you have already committed to making a difference with your registration. You have committed to your teammates and to yourself to bring the best of yourself each time you step into our facility to compete. You’ve committed to raise awareness in the community that there ARE still competitions that we can safely participate in. You’ve made the commitment to set a fine example that fitness is still alive and well in the Quad Cities area. THANK YOU: You’ve also committed to supporting local non-profit organizations since a portion of your registration fee will benefit U.S. military veterans and first responders.

So we ask you again: Why participate in a Get A Grip League? Answers follow…
